Where there’s marijuana there’s money. And lots of it. People are using the cover of medical marijuana to make extraordinary amounts of money. In short, (they’re) engaged in drug trafficking.

U.S. Attorney for Northern California Melinda Haag • Comparing medical marijuana dealers to drug traffickers — a harsh take, considering medical marijuana is legal in California. The U.S. government is planning a crackdown of medical marijuana dispensaries in the state within the next two months. This actually follows something Eric Holder said about a year ago, when Prop 19 looked like it might have a chance of passing in California. source (via • follow)
OK, this is kind of a conspiracy theory, but hear me out: On the heels of this “crackdown” is going to come some sort of organized political effort to legalize marijuana. It may not hit until after the 2012 election, but there’s just no way that the government can turn a blind eye to a) the money that would come from legalizing and regulating it, b) the crime it would reduce/eliminate (and not just in the U.S., but in Mexico, where government regulation in America would have to help neuter the drug gangs at least somewhat, right?), and c) the benefits that Big Pharma/large-scale (read: corporate) dope-growing operations could potentially reap and the taxes that could be collected from those benefits. A potential side bonus: the massive amber chillwaves of grain that will calm America the fuck down.
What if everyone could get government weed instead of government cheese?
